the quarries of SABUCINA

The Caves of Sabucina are located on the homonymous mountain, about 10 km from the town of Caltanissetta.

The geological formation of Monte Sabucina is identified in the Geological Map of Italy, 1,100,000 scale of the IGM 2nd edition. 1955, as belonging to the Upper Pliocene (P3s), in fact the entire plateau is made up of calcarenites, sands and sandy clays. The calcarenites, in various points, are outcropping or in any case under a few tens of centimeters of sand and clay; they occur in compact formations. These geological peculiarities have meant that a significant extraction activity was concentrated on Mount Sabucina, presumably starting from the 17th century.

Today only the Michele Dell’Aira quarries are in operation, arranged homogeneously in the upper floor.

The quarries are located along the S.S. 122 Bis towards Ponte Capodarso about 10 km from Caltanissetta.

The quarries are open in a calcarenite bank of the upper Pliocene. The use of stone has ancient origins.
