HiSTORy of the quarry

The Sabucina quarries take their name from the mountain of the same name, located a few kilometers away from Caltanissetta.
Its geological formation dates back to the upper Pliocene and its upper plateaux contain calcarenite, sands and sandy clay.
Calcarenite mining on Mount Sabucina is documented as early as the seventeenth century. The mountain has, in fact, a particular geological structure that facilitated mining activities, especially because the stone can be found just a few centimeters from the surface, under a thin layer of sand and clay.
